Who are the Wesley brothers?
John and Charles Wesley were leaders of what came to be called the Evangelical Awakening in 18th century England. Both were clergymen of the Church of England whose renewal they sought. They brought fresh and vigorous proclamation of the gospel which was welcomed by many.

The Journey of John Wesley
Who was this evangelist and how did he come to lead the people called Methodists? What was his message and what was his strategy? What were the distinctive emphases of his approach?

Charles Wesley – son, brother, evangelist and hymnwriter
Charles in the shadow of John in terms of founding the Methodist movement? Conflict with John. His poetic hymn writing gift. The role of hymns and music as a means of touching the hearts of people and shaping their theology. Key themes in Charles Wesley’s hymns? Some singing.

John Wesley’s spirituality today
After nearly three hundred years, what can we receive from John Wesley today? What is his living legacy to the church? How can we adapt his message for our day?
Session four: Norman Brookes
Charles Wesley’s legacy, a singing Church
Following in the footsteps of Charles Wesley. A glance at Hymnwriters in the 19c and 20c hymns from the UK, USA and Aotearoa NZ. We will enjoy some singing together.

This workshop has been organized by Waitakere Parish Rev Augusten Subhan.
Workshop taken by Rev Terry Wall and Rev Norman Brookes.
Rev Dr Terry Wall and Rev Norman Brookes are both retired Methodist Ministers. Both Ministers are authors of many books like “Hymnwriters Downunder” and “With Heart and Voice” Hymns that are contemporary but often set to well-known tunes.
